Bansko, Bulgaria


The town of Bansko is situated in Southwestern Bulgaria, at the foothills of one of the majestic Bulgarian mountains - Pirin, which is a national preserve, included in the WORLD NATURAL HERITAGE list. Top-class ski-resort of world significance, visited also in summer as a starting point for excursions in the mountain.

The skiing conditions in Bansko are excellent. The Pirin Mountain has an Alpine character with three peaks towering above 2900m. Snow falls are abundant, providing a constant winter snow cover up to 2 m thick. The skiing season along the Pirin slopes starts in the middle of December and ends in mid-April. The slopes offer runs and tracks for all types of skiers from novices to experts and thrill-seekers and, of course snow-boarders. Bansko Ski Area offers the latest state-of-the-art Doppelmayr ropeways, including an 8-passenger Gondola ropeway, 4-seater chairlifts, 2-seater chairlifts, T-bar lifts, platters, etc.

Bansko is among those Bulgarian towns which Fate had destined to play a noteworthy role in the historic development of Bulgarian nation especially during the colossal national upsurge during the Revival Period. Its achievements cannot be touched by the relentless passage of time. They lie in the unique houses of Banskalii with their tall pinewood gates and carved-wood ceilings, in the architecture and the fine iconostasis of churches, in the daring brushstroke of the icons painted by local iconographers, for here Past and Present are interwoven in a way that is at once distinctive and original.

The town offers a wealth of culture and history with its many museums, monuments and its permanent ethnographic and Bansko school of icon painting exhibitions.

The region is famous for its unique cuisine and colourful folklore.

In August Bansko puts on an international jazz festival.

And all this amidst the dynamics and emotions of winter sport competitions and the contrasting serenity of the first free downhill run. Since 2003, Bansko Ski Area offers the latest state-of -the -art Doppelmayr ropeways, including an 8-passenger Gondola ropeway, 4-seater chairlifts, 2-seater chairlifts, T-bar lifts, platters, etc. Existing facilities and installations are envisaged for replacement with new ones.
